mSystems, ASM's open-access, systems microbiology journal, publishes impactful, cutting-edge science associated with metabolic and regulatory systems on the scale of both a single cell and entire microbial communities. This includes multi-omic analyses with large data sets, single-cell studies of regulatory function, and microbial community ecology studies that involve modeling of ecosystem processes. mSystems provides rapid, streamlined decisions.

mSystems welcomes the following article types for publication:

  • Research Articles
  • Observations
  • Minireviews
  • Opinions and Hypotheses
  • Commentaries
  • Perspectives
  • Resource Reports
  • Methods and Protocols
  • Editorials
  • Letters to the Editor

As part of the submission process, authors are encouraged to provide a 150-word "Importance" paragraph, a nontechnical summary written in language that conveys the importance of the work to non-specialists.

mSystems has launched an open peer review pilot, which reflects ASM’s commitment to openness and transparency in the rigorous review process that underlies scientific research.

mSystems is now Format Neutral.

ASM primary research journals will consider for publication manuscripts that have been posted in a recognized not-for-profit preprint archive. Please review our preprint policy announcement for more information.

ASM is collaborating with Overleaf, a free cloud-based, collaborative authoring tool, as a pilot project to provide a LaTeX authoring template to mSystems authors. The template allows authors to easily prepare and edit their manuscripts using Overleaf and then submit manuscripts to mSystems with one click directly from within Overleaf.

Benefits of publishing with mSystems:

  • Rapid decisions (46 avg calendar days to first decision)
  • Home for systems microbiology research
  • Final copyedited, composed articles posted weekly
  • Expedited review for manuscripts previously reviewed by
    certain highly selective non-ASM journals
  • Rigorous peer review by working scientists in your field
  • Open-access publication: wide dissemination of research
  • Authors retain copyright under a CC-BY license
  • 97% of articles cited within two years of publication

Please review the Instructions to Authors (PDF), Submission Checklist (PDF), and the FAQs for additional information.
